The short Jan. 1 news item “Court upholds laptop inspections at border” deserved much more prominence. The judge’s ruling that federal officials have the right to take possession of, read and copy the contents of any traveler’s personal computer, without probable cause, completes the gutting of the Fourth Amendment begun by George W. Bush’s Patriot Act. This is a more frightening destruction of our constitutional rights than the activities of the National Security Agency.
