Former secretary of state Colin Powell in Washington in 2018. (Erin Schaff/For The Washington Post)

Norman Ornstein’s Jan. 31 Outlook essay, “If Republicans won’t risk defeat to tell the truth, Trump will own their party,” hit the mark. He reminded me that Gen. Colin Powell chastised the Republican Party for its cowardice and refusal to challenge then-President Donald Trump’s outrageous conduct: “The Republican Party needs to get a grip.” He surely did not realize how true those words would be. Losing an election is not the end of the world.
