Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi subdued the free press in India. In the harrowing authoritarian rule of Mr. Modi, the Internet is the only source for the free flow of information for Indians. Journalists critical of Mr. Modi or his party are in jail or legally charged with fabricated crimes. The April 28 editorial “Internet freedom in India,” which asked the Biden administration to “speak out” against the encroachment on Internet freedom, was appreciated by most Indians.

I am apprehensive of potential civil war or growth in terrorism in India because authoritarianism leads to discontent and turmoil. Such a situation in India is not conducive to the security interests of the United States.
