Although D.C. Council member Marion Barry’s political incorrectness is indisputable [“Latest blast from a bigot,” editorial, April 26], he does raise a point about unemployment in the District.

I have often pondered why this nation must import schoolteachers, medical workers and small-business operators from other countries when there is such a need for jobs among citizens who are already here.

Mr. Barry (D-Ward 8) says, sometimes too loudly, what many people think. I can only imagine his frustration. His district has high unemployment, which leads to poverty and crime. Why is there not a national effort to train Americans for the jobs that need to be filled?

I hope that President Obama will address this issue in his second term.
