The May 29 Metro article “Some still lament move at Prince George’s school” mentioned the tremendous success and popularity of the Quality Education in Science and Technology (Quest), created in 1990 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. Quest, however, has stopped taking students from outside the Roosevelt boundary, and “the percentage of African American students in the program has declined by 30 percent, from 80 percent African American to 50 percent.”
The decline was not 30 percent; it was 30 percentage points. A decline from 80 percent to 50 percent is a more notable 37.5 percent.
One hopes that many students in the Quest program are familiar with the difference between percentage points and percent.
