I have Usher syndrome, the leading cause of deafblindness in the United States, and for the past 18 years, I have traveled with a guide dog on Metro. Station managers have proven to be my quiet heroes.

My experience has shown me that station managers are well trained in dealing with individuals who may have low vision or blindness or are hard of hearing. The managers are kind and courteous without being patronizing and have excellent communication skills for directing blind individuals without having to physically touch the individual to give the person direction.

Traveling on Metro especially during rush hour can be very stressful and scary. However, I feel a sense of security in knowing that at each end of my journey is a person who understands and tries to ensure that my experience on Metro will be a safe, accessible and good one.
