I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Dec. 20 Style article “Beyond ‘Llewyn Davis.’ ” As a suburban New Jersey teenager, my friends and I grew up frequenting Greenwich Village, listening to folk and jazz, mingling with wealthy East Siders and eating at Hong Fats in Chinatown. I would be remiss, though, if I did not mention one disappointment. The caption for the photo of writers and artists that appeared with the article singled out Shel Silverstein and Norman Mailer but failed to identify James Baldwin, clearly visible in the center of the photo. Baldwin’s books and essays opened my eyes to racial prejudice and taught me a lot about life beyond the confines of suburbia.
