House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) in Washington on March 23. (J. Scott Applewhite/Associated Press)

Regarding the March 24 editorial “Mr. Ryan, bystander”:

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), instead of being a not-so-innocent bystander, as the editorial stated, probably wanted to have his important message be considered thoughtfully by all Republican voters, including Donald Trump’s supporters.

Saying now that he would not support Mr. Trump as the Republican presidential nominee might have made the media happy, but it would have closed the minds of Mr. Trump’s voters to Mr. Ryan’s arguments.
