I was shocked to read in the Sept. 19 Style article about Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough’s announcement that he will retire next yearthat Clough’s action to remove a portion of a video from the 2010/11 “Hide/Seek” exhibition “sparked an outcry from gay activists.”

This stunningly narrow and misleading characterization of the opposition surely would surprise former Post reporter Jacqueline Trescott, who was careful to write at the time that the removal was “followed by an outcry from all segments of the arts and arts funding world.”
