Some recent horrific news stories have opened our collective eyes to knowing who our neighbors are. I had the experience recently of meeting some not-so-nearby neighbors I probably never would have met if it were not for my 10-year-old terrier, Kobe.

Kobe made a break from me on May 17 and eventually found himself running in circles on Lee Highway in Arlington, extremely frightened and confused. Enter the good people of Arlington and those traversing Lee Highway. Within seconds, people were acting as roadblocks to stop traffic, some pulling their cars over to aid in the effort. When we finally had him, neighbors brought out water and even dog treats, which helped him calm down.

So, if you found yourself wrangling a little black terrier on a recent Thursday afternoon, you have my sincerest gratitude.

Neighbors don’t always live on the same block as you do. Sometimes they just show up in the middle of a busy highway.
