The Jan. 2 Metro article “Arlington leaders seeking advice” reported that Arlington County Board member John Vihstadt (I) is proposing that the board vote to approve county contracts of more than $1 million. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Vihstadt. In the District, reformers want to take away the D.C. Council’s power to vote on large contracts. That authority has been at the root of several scandals. Companies seeking large contracts could use campaign contributions to put money in the pockets of elected officials voting for the contracts.

Don’t assume that Arlington is different from the District and is immune to such corruption.
