Regarding “Union aims to block D.C. bus plan” [Metro, July 20]:

Oh, the joys of being 83 and having lived in the District for 41 years. I well remember the days when D.C. Transit operated. What a disaster: Its buses were dirty, full of fumes, not air-conditioned and nearly always late. Sometime in the early 1970s, the city had had enough and turned to public transit in the form of Metrobus. It is not a perfect system, but just the thought of going private again unsettles me, since I frequently ride Metrobus and Metrorail. Younger generations have no idea what D.C. Transit was like, and I hope they never find out.
