The Sept. 9 Metro article “The cool kids in school are on patrol” rekindled memories of my days as a safety patroller in 1948. Where old Benning Road Elementary resided is now a Metro parking lot. Our primary job was to maintain order as students crossed the congested intersection of Benning Road and Minnesota Avenue NE.

However, there was one difference. We didn’t wear neon-colored belts of orange or green. Our belts were colored white, and they had to be washed. If we didn’t pass inspection, we would receive demerits.
