In her Dec. 1 letter, “Broccoli vs. burgers,” Ulka Agarwal argued that one should forswear Big Macs (and other red meat) in the interest of the evolution of the human race. However, as the worst consequences of a Big Mac-based diet usually manifest themselves after one’s reproductive years, the evolutionary ramifications are tenuous at best.

The impact of red meat on longevity is more the issue. Given the pressure on reducing entitlement programs, perhaps we should encourage the consumption of red meat after 50.
