If a woman can meet the battle-tested standards of the military, then she should have the opportunity [“Combat jobs open to women,” front page, Jan. 24]. In turn, however, all young women should now be required to register for the draft.

The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the male-only draft in Rostker v. Goldberg (1981). The reasoning was that women are excluded from direct combat; therefore their service would not be needed for the draft. This logic disintegrates now with Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta’s decision. Congress must amend this bigoted law.
