On Christmas Eve, my son and I were driving to Williamsburg on Interstate 64, east of Richmond, when we suddenly heard a loud buzzing and felt an odd vibration. I pulled over. One of my tires was flat.

I called 911 to report my breakdown to police. The operator connected me to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which took my information and, much to my surprise, offered to send a truck to help.

Almost immediately after I hung up, the promised help arrived. A man named Chuck set up flares and cones, jacked up the car and switched the flat for the spare. He was friendly and helpful throughout, despite working in heavy traffic on Christmas Eve. He refused any sort of tip.

Elapsed time from flat tire to back on the highway: 29 minutes. Thank you, Chuck, and thank you, VDOT.
