How vindicated I felt when reading in the June 5 Health & Science article “Taste buds go beyond sweet, sour” that red is really not a proper description for hair that is much closer in color to orange.
Forty years ago, in my defiant youth, when first applying for a U.S. passport, I wrote “orange” in response to the question about hair color. I received a letter from the passport agency informing me that orange was “not an acceptable hair color.” I clipped some locks, sent them back and asked the people at the agency to describe them. I received a passport, along with paperwork describing my hair color as red.
There must be tens of thousands of us with this false official description of our locks.
