The May 22 Washington Forum commentary “A contract for the middle class” started badly. In the second paragraph, the authors stated, “As progressives ourselves. . . .” However, one of them, Jonathan Cowan, is president of Third Way, which explicitly rejects progressive policies in favor of moderate ones, including conservative fiscal policies. The other author, Jack Markell, is governor of Delaware and has consistently fought to implement Third Way policies, including lowering taxes on corporations and wealthy individuals, attempting to cut salaries and benefits for state employees and, recently, proposing to eliminate the estate tax while trying to raise taxes on the elderly.

Research into either the supported policies or, indeed, the explicit words of these individuals demonstrates that their claim to be “progressives” is not true.
