In her informative Oct. 11 Metro column, “Hippie High, still successfully coloring outside the lines,” Petula Dvorak left out an important reason why Arlington’s untraditional H-B Woodlawn Secondary School works. It is reflected in the school’s motto, “Verbum Sap Sat” — “A word to the wise is sufficient.” While it’s true that students can do all those things she describes — skip class, go barefoot in the hallways, participate in hiring teachers — they also learn that with those freedoms comes responsibility. And at H-B they take that responsibility very seriously.
