In July, my 85-year-old mother-in-law and I visited the District. It was my second time to the area and her first. She is in great shape for her age, but she recently had knee surgery and used a cane during our visit.

Throughout our time in the city, I was impressed time and time again with the kindness and caring that was shown to her and me. Every time we got on the subway, people assisted her, gave up their seat and offered a helping hand. Each time I asked a passerby for directions, he or she stopped and directed me. (Even better, I was pointed in the correct direction.) So, thank you, Washington, D.C. You showed me that kindness, caring and helpfulness are still alive.
