The Aug, 20 editorial “Instant Asia experts” questioned whether Fairfax County should take sides in ethnic disputes and selectively memorialize tragedies.
As I recall, we have memorials (on and near the Mall) because interest groups wanted them there and had the clout to build them. We observe Christmas, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day as holidays because interest groups selectively fought for and won them.
Few traditions are more American than selective recognition of the views, desires and grievances of groups with the power and the smarts to get heard.
