The partial or total taking of properties along the route of the Purple Line is a small price to pay given the huge economic and quality-of-life benefits the project will bring to the region [“In the path of the Purple Line,” Metro, Jan. 26]. Besides getting thousands of cars off the road, speeding east-to-west transit times and creating jobs, the Purple Line will spur desperately needed revitalization, especially among the blighted commercial areas along University Boulevard. I hope that the Purple Line encourages developers to replace many of the ill-conceived strip malls there with tasteful and walkable mixed-use projects with apartments, condos, restaurants and other amenities.
