Tom Toles [editorial page, Feb. 28] nailed the hypocrisy of expressing horror at eating horses while continuing to consume chickens, pigs, cattle and other farm animals. Quite simply, there is no rational or ethical difference between eating a dead horse, cat, dog, pig or chicken. In every case, you’re eating a being with a developed personality.

Readers who are shocked and dismayed by the horsemeat scandal, as well as readers who would not consume dog or cat meat, should extend their compassion to all animals by adopting a vegetarian diet.
