Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood says he is concerned that hybrid autos do not make enough noise to warn pedestrians of their presence [“Lahood: Hybrid cars dangerously quiet,” news, Jan. 10].

My mother warned me as a child to look both ways before crossing the street. I have never approached an intersection and thought, “I don’t hear any noise so I must be able to cross without looking.”
