Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is followed by former Senate majority leader Trent Lott at the Capitol on Dec. 14. (J. Scott Applewhite/Associated Press)

Why is it that the caption for a photograph that accompanied the Dec. 16 front-page article “Sen. Collins taking leap of faith with tax-bill support ” failed to identify the man following Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) down an escalator? He’s none other than former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.).

In the interest of open government — not to mention a window on how lobbying works in Washington — would it not have been a good idea to identify him?
