Two things stagger belief: President Trump’s menacing tweet Friday that the media “is the enemy of the American People” and the lack of any GOP response. The tweet is Hitlerian. It is not hysterical to say so. This is an attack on the First Amendment. When a president uses the word “enemy” in response to a right under the First Amendment, he is enabling the worst elements of the country to target journalists and to do harm to them, undermining our democracy and disgracing the office of the president.

If we have learned anything from recent history, it is the need early on to reject any slide toward fascism. Unless we do, we may be seeing burning of books (“fake news,” of course) in the Rose Garden.
