As a former University of Richmond soccer player, I was shocked by the university’s decision to eliminate men’s soccer and track and field so that it can add a lacrosse team [“Some feel Richmond’s addition does not add up,” Sports, Nov. 2].

Richmond soccer alums have shown themselves to be generous donors to university athletics; if “philanthropy” was behind the move to bring lacrosse to Richmond, please give soccer supporters a chance to step forward to save the sport.

Given that the city of Richmond boasts a minor-league professional soccer team that plays D.C. United annually, isn’t this an opportune time to attract the next generation of Landon Donovans to the school? Decisions made without transparency raise questions. What gives? The process has been out of character for the university.
