Thanks to Robert McCartney [“Like Swiss cheese? If so, you’ll love ‘ethics’ bills in Va.,” Metro, Feb. 23] for reporting on the Virginia legislature’s pretense of ethics reform. As with so much of the corruption in our present society (one thinks of the late financial unpleasantness), the real scandal is in what’s legal.
As we watch the grab for goodies that apparently motivates many of our representatives above all else, respect for any legislation they produce continues to plummet. As with the disgrace of former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, so many seem willing to sell their souls for such tawdry bling as golfing jaunts and gaudy jewelry.
What kind of people want to belong to a club like that?
