Regarding the Aug. 21 editorial “Get smarter on faculty benefits”:
Article I, Section 15A of the Virginia constitution, which declares marriage to be a union between one woman and one man, was approved by the state legislature and by voters. Private universities can offer whatever faculty benefits they wish, but state universities should respect the spirit of the state constitution. Moreover, failing to offer benefits to same-sex partners will have no significant effect on faculty quality. It is a buyers’ market for college professors overall, and it will continue to be as online learning keeps growing — just ask the many capable but struggling adjunct professors out there.
