No interest is more special than your own, and Wal-Mart’s Henry Jordan demonstrated that his special interest is alive and well in his March 17 Local Opinions commentary, “Don’t hold Wal-Mart to a different standard,” urging the D.C. Council to shelve the Large Retailer Accountability Act.

Mr. Jordan presented the old argument that new regulation will stifle growth. The truth is that expanded wealth has failed to materialize in our age of deregulation. Attempts to correct failure by introducing regulation should be championed, not disparaged by old, false mantras that have kept the District’s neighborhoods from realizing success.
