In the May 12 Metro article “Water line break turns construction site into a lake,” The Post described “the many cubic feet of water” filling an excavation site after the most recent D.C. water main break.

While the volume of a liquid may be expressed in cubic inches, the English language has a perfectly good word: gallon.

I think the reporter could have expressed better the idea by having written “many thousands of gallons” or even “many hundreds of kiloliters.”
