As details begin to emerge from the negotiations between federal prosecutors and Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) and his wife, Maureen [“Prosecutors, McDonnell’s lawyers to meet,” front page, Aug. 19], a theme is evident. It is becoming clear that one of the governor’s primary lines of defense is that he and his wife don’t talk much.

The governor would have us believe that in times of family “financial strain,” he did not know that his wife bought $30,000 in Star Scientific stock or that she had, after selling shares, repurchased the stock in January 2012. He also apparently did not know about his wife’s $15,000 New York shopping spree or the source of funding for the $6,500 watch on his wrist.

Possible? Yes. But likely? The citizens of Virginia deserve better.
