So intrigued was I by the July 10 Food article on mumbo sauce [“Mumbo sauce trickles up”], I dropped what I was doing and made a batch using the Almost Capital City recipe. To my amazement, it was spot on for Chalet sauce, which I have been trying to duplicate without success since I first tasted it in 1966 at a Swiss Chalet restaurant in Buffalo.

Swiss Chalet is a Canadian restaurant chain. It became notorious for serving barbecued chicken with its infamous “Chalet sauce.” The french fries were awesome when drenched or dipped in the sauce. Today there are hundreds of Swiss Chalet venues throughout Canada, and a powdered mix for the sauce is available in supermarkets.

Perchance the District swaggerjacked the sauce from north of the border, eh?
