In her March 14 op-ed column, “Get a (new) job!,” Catherine Rampell listed several possible reasons for the unusually low rate of employees leaving current jobs and taking other ones. One reason not given was that many workers’ home values are underwater. When workers living in depressed regions can’t sell their homes because their mortgages are greater than their homes are worth, they can’t move to areas of greater opportunity. All the more reason that relieving beleaguered home owners of onerous debt is necessary to improve a bad economy.
