With regard to the Capital Weather Gang’s June 7 blog excerpt, “Too many tornado warnings?” [Metro], I agree that the National Weather Service may sometimes be over-aggressive in issuing severe storm warnings. But the local TV channels are guilty of taking the warnings to a new level with their Team Tornado-style reporting.
Wall-to-wall reporting from Chopper X, eyewitness accounts of dark clouds over West Weatherville and streamed video from Joe Jones’s back porch turn a Weather Service storm warning into a “we’re all going to die” scenario. I know it’s about the ratings, but better ratings might come from more responsible reporting. Keep us informed, not frightened.
