I was saddened to read about the dismissal of Christophe A.G. Tulou as head of the District Department of the Environment [“Head of environment office fired for ‘breach of protocol,’ ” Metro, Sept. 1].

I have known Mr. Tulou professionally for 20 years and have found him to be one of the smartest, most highly effective and most respected state environmental regulators in the country. Ironically, the week he was dismissed, he received two of the three national awards presented by the Environmental Council of the States to recognize excellence in government for innovative environmental programs. He will be sorely missed.
