Through the years, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has been the House member most likely to bring home a report card with “Doesn’t play well with others!” scrawled in bright red letters. A founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, Jordan has historically been a ferocious leader of the most pugnacious conservatives.

And so it was rather jarring last week to watch Jordan align with establishment Republicans to quell a rebellion from within the very caucus Jordan co-founded to help elect Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) as the new speaker of the House.

Now, Jordan is positioned to be a key player in the Republican-controlled House — not only taking the gavel on the Judiciary Committee but also heading <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/news/2023/01/ohios-jim-jordan-to-spearhead-new-select-committee-to-probe-weaponization-of-government.html" target=_blank>a Church Committee-style</a> panel charged with investigating “the weaponization of the federal government.” The new subcommittee is a project important to Jordan and many other conservatives who think they have been unfairly targeted by partisan left-wing bureaucrats.

Jordan has a long history of being a thorn in leadership’s side. As far back as a decade ago, he led a revolt against fellow Ohio Republican and then-Speaker John A. Boehner after Boehner cut a deal on the debt ceiling with President Barack Obama that included modest tax increases. The Jordan-led uprising resulted in a smaller package of cuts without the tax increases that “cost America its AAA credit rating and created the blunt across-the-board spending cuts known as the sequester,” <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/inside-the-republican-suicide-machine-122436/" target=_blank>Rolling Stone reported</a>.

“Conservatives stood firm,” Jordan boasted then. “We [forced] Washington to begin addressing its spending-driven debt crisis.” It was a declaration of victory <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/10/politics/house-republican-conference-rules-deal/index.html" target="_blank">echoed in recent days</a> by this year’s edition of the right-wing insurgents after forcing McCarthy to make various budgeting concessions. But this time, Jordan was in the leadership’s camp.

McCarthy had laid the groundwork: After <a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/07/jordan-challenge-mccarthy-minority-leader-971042" target=_blank>butting heads with Jordan</a> in the battle to become the GOP leader in 2018, he had smartly pursued a different tack than previous party leaders, cultivating Jordan’s friendship and giving him a seat at the table. <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/07/republican-speaker-drama-kevin-mccarthy-00076885" target=_blank>As Politico reported</a>, one McCarthy ally said of Jordan that the new speaker’s victory “wouldn’t have been possible without him.”

The GOP’s majority is so slim that a handful of malcontents can disrupt it at any time. Jordan will be a crucial mediator to keep everyone in line. An important early test came with this week’s vote on the House’s rules package, which passed with surprisingly little drama.

Jordan will undoubtedly lead in typical firebrand fashion, but his metamorphosis from leader of the insurgents to loyal lieutenant is still striking. One longtime Ohio-based GOP operative who has worked with Jordan told me this week, “Jim has always had a pragmatic side. He knew it wasn’t a choice between McCarthy and someone more conservative. It was merely an issue of wringing out a few procedural concessions, with the risk of a coalition leader if they overplayed their hand. His being with McCarthy helped protect against that.”

Jordan’s bombastic style has guaranteed a high profile. But watching him over the years from within his own state leaves the impression that there’s a limit to how far Jordan is willing to go in attracting more scrutiny than necessary. When Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman announced two years ago that he would not seek another term, it was <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/open/2021/01/in-or-out-jim-jordan-looms-large-over-race-for-suddenly-open-ohio-senate-seat.html" target=_blank>widely believed that Jordan</a> — whose politics reflect the state’s <a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-barack-obama-elections-89ff0c83049f6eac32f09271756775de" target=_blank>embrace of Trumpism</a> — would jump headfirst into the race. He was also rumored to be considering a <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2020/11/27/mailbag-will-jim-jordan-primary-mike-dewine-for-governor/" target=_blank>primary challenge</a> to Gov. Mike DeWine.

Instead, Jordan passed on both opportunities, just as he staunchly rebuffed efforts last week to put his name forward for speaker as an alternative to McCarthy, and routinely ignores entering the presidential sweepstakes. At 58, Jordan is in the prime of his political life. With a decade of state legislative experience under his belt and beginning his ninth term in the House, he has an impressive conservative résumé and an enviable base of Republican support for taking the next step. Instead, he appears content where he is.

Many <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/536371-jim-jordan-says-he-wont-run-for-senate-in-2022/" target=_blank>take him at his word</a> that he likes his current job. But Jordan might also worry that a higher-profile race would almost certainly bring renewed scrutiny about what he knew regarding allegations of sex abuse involving a wrestling team doctor at <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/06/politics/jordan-osu-wrestlers-strauss-invs/index.html" target=_blank>Ohio State University</a>, including when Jordan was an assistant coach between 1987 and 1995. Jordan denied that he had any knowledge of the accusations, but some former wrestlers claimed otherwise. In 2020, the university <a href="https://www.si.com/college/2020/05/09/ohio-state-settlement-richard-strauss-sexual-abuse" target=_blank>agreed to pay</a> about $41 million to settle lawsuits brought by former athletes and other men.

Whatever his reasons for standing pat, it’s to McCarthy’s benefit. Given what we witnessed last week from the rebels on the right, the Ohio congressman might no longer be one of the GOP’s most outrageous members. It will be an interesting party indeed if Jordan now qualifies as one of the adults in the room.

Ageism is one form of bigotry that never seems to get old

For decades, living in the United States as a relatively healthy White Protestant man isolated me from the bigotry — as well as the benefits (i.e., programs and services) — reserved for minorities or members of special interest groups.

Eventually, though, something happened that landed me in a special interest category: I woke up one day to find myself “old.” Things changed. I was flooded with mail from Medicare, Social Security, private insurers and other businesses targeting me with offers, alerts and warnings. My digital feeds cautioned me to avoid “senior citizen scams” and offered endless services to enhance my “golden years.” Those developments were mostly positive, if sometimes annoying.

But then came the negatives, especially in the past couple of years, when I arrived in my mid-60s. I sometimes notice younger people in social settings looking past me or through me, as though I’m almost invisible. Clerks and servers ask more often whether I’m eligible for senior discounts — a savings, for sure, but sometimes they apply it automatically. Ouch. People meeting me for the first time will sometimes casually inquire, “So, are you retired?” Why would you assume that?

Because of my online Post photo — which I try to keep current — it has become increasingly common for people annoyed by my views to respond not by addressing the merits, but by simply calling me an “old White guy,” as if that made their point. Just recently, a reader emailed and referred to me as “an elderly White boy.” Elderly? Yikes.

In fact, I’m thrilled to be the age I am. I’ve never enjoyed life more. Society’s change in attitude toward me — based strictly on the passage of time — is noticeable and striking, but not too personally disturbing. I’m glad I was young when I was and not now; I worry about my children and grandchildren navigating their way through this contentious world.

Guest Opinion: Please do not put a party hat on my head — and other indignities of old age

I realize that while I’m more fortunate than many — still able to pursue a career and enjoy a rewarding life with loving family and friends — in too many cases, the United States, compared with other cultures, holds its aging population in contempt. Too often, “old people” here are regarded as useless, helpless or a nuisance, left to wind down the clock as they stare out the window, a lifetime of experiences, work, achievement and sacrifice forgotten.

While we rightly ostracize, deplatform or even “cancel” people for their racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, homophobia and other prejudices, ageism is openly practiced, and ageist stereotypes thrive. Examples in the news abound. A <a href="https://www.witn.com/2022/04/15/two-wanted-grandmother-carjacking-caught-randolph-county/">TV crime story</a> from April involving a 74-year-old North Carolina woman reported that “a grandmother” was the victim of a carjacking and also referred to her as “elderly.” In a more tragic case, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/77-year-eleanor-bowles-stabbed-death-home-car/story?id=95066424">ABC News</a> recently reported on the fatal stabbing of an Atlanta woman whom it pegged as a “77-year-old grandmother.”

Both women most likely adored their grandchildren, but in neither case were those offspring part of the story. Maybe these women could have been defined by other, more pertinent life achievements. But because they were over a certain age and apparently their children had borne children, their status as “grandmothers” became their primary identifier.

Many of the most common insults leveled against President Biden are age-related. Granted, as president his mental acuity will be scrutinized, as was that of other older presidents such as Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan. But the mocking tone underscoring many of the jokes and memes is nothing short of cruel.

How should we respectfully refer to old people? I’ve seen people 60-plus still refer to themselves as “middle aged,” but let’s be a little more realistic and cut that off at least by 59. The word “old,” however, is such a pejorative that it should not be used alone. “Older person” is preferable. I hesitate to use “elderly” at all, which implies not just old age but a feeble condition. I’ve always despised “senior citizen” and references to the “golden years.” How ‘bout “best people ever?” That’s good.

But more important than terminology is how we regard older Americans in general. We should all be able to take a good-natured joke, whether about our age, our appearance, our background or our beliefs. But the rampant practice of ageist bigotry should join all the other “isms” and “phobias” as unacceptable, especially when it crosses the line from friendly ribbing to cruel attacks.

I’m going to add that to my list of causes. Right now, though, this 66-year-old grandfather is going to hit the couch for an afternoon nap — an “old person” stereotype I happily embrace.

Some members of the lame-duck Congress are seeking a last-minute bipartisan deal on <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/12/05/congress-working-strike-last-minute-immigration-deals/" target="_blank">immigration reform</a> before Republicans, including a contingent of immigration hardliners, take control of the House.

As usual, Republicans are concerned with making sure any deal includes enhanced border security, while Democrats are more focused on a pathway to citizenship for “dreamers” and other undocumented migrants.

But among those Americans advocating for legalizing some migrants’ status is a constituency often associated with Trump Country’s “build that wall” crowd: Midwestern farmers. In October, <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2022/10/14/ohio-farmers-call-for-help/">the Ohio Capital Journal</a> reported that Ohio farmers consider a deal for migrant farm laborers “a matter of national security.”

Why? Because the United States, historically the <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/0712/top-agricultural-producing-countries.aspx">largest agricultural exporter in the world</a>, is beginning to buy more food products than it sells. According to the Agriculture Department, <a href="https://u.s/" target="_blank">U.S</a>. <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Agriculture-Projections.jpg" target="_blank">agricultural imports are expected to exceed exports</a> next year and every year until 2031. A major reason is the labor force: “Americans just simply are not interested in working in the field, in the greenhouse, or the packing house,” Bob Jones, a vegetable grower in northern Ohio, told the Capital Journal. “We are either going to import workers or we’re going to import food. The choice is really that simple.”

Jones and others are urging Congress to pass the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1603">Farm Workforce Modernization Act</a>, which would create “certified agricultural worker” status for migrant farmworkers, allowing them to stay in the United States for 5½ years and apply for permanent resident status after certain requirements are met. The House has passed the bill, and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/12/05/congress-working-strike-last-minute-immigration-deals/">The Post reported</a> last week that Sens. Michael F. Bennet (D-Colo.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) were working to advance the bill in the Senate.

When I was growing up on a southern Ohio farm in the 1960s and early ’70s, farmers had little trouble finding help. When it was time to bale hay, for instance, those with modest operations could easily collect kids from neighboring farms, pay us $2 or $3 an hour (equivalent to <a href="https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1968?amount=2">$17 or $18</a> today) and count on our help for a few days. Farmers planting thousands of acres of corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops — along with raising cattle, sheep or hogs — usually employed year-round help, which was easy to find from a pool of willing workers.

But, as Jones indicated, Americans increasingly aren’t — for a variety of reasons — as willing to work in jobs requiring strenuous manual labor, often outdoors in the heat or cold. Sons or daughters who at one time could be expected to take over the family farm are pursuing other career paths. These trends are leading many farmers to take the drastic measure of selling their land <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/in-the-heart-of-trump-country-renewable-energy-is-about-to-flourish/2019/05/23/2052d224-7d8d-11e9-a5b3-34f3edf1351e_story.html">to wind and solar companies</a> — and as good as that may be for sustainable energy, the world still needs to be fed.

Although a bill expanding legal agricultural migrant labor would help farmers in Ohio and other states, a broader bipartisan immigration fix being developed by Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) would be more meaningful. The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/12/05/congress-working-strike-last-minute-immigration-deals/">still-evolving bill</a> is reported to include a path to citizenship for the dreamers in exchange for $25 billion in funding for border security.

For far too long, the immigration issue has been a political bludgeon for both sides — the right decrying dangerous “open borders,” the left lamenting honest immigrants forced to live in the shadows. Both sides are right and wrong.

The United States has a responsibility to vet people seeking to enter the country. Any deal should provide effective new tools to secure the border — including finishing walls already under construction and providing more border agents — but also recognize that even if people here illegally should, by all rights, be rounded up and shipped out, that’s unfeasible.

A more reasonable solution would be to agree to a pathway to legality for those already here — not those coming illegally in the future — including eventual permanent residency or citizenship, so millions of workers could thrive as taxpaying citizens moving from the shadows to the daylight. And that should be coupled with making legal immigration easier and faster, to make that path more attractive.

Finally, there’s this: Solving the immigration dilemma is the right thing to do. Despite a focus by the right on bad actors who enter the United States for nefarious reasons — and those concerns are sometimes valid — the overwhelming majority of migrants come here for a better life for themselves and their families. They risk their lives to escape hopeless futures and travel through perilous terrain. When people want to come here that badly — and are willing to work for us in jobs we desperately need to fill — can’t we find a way to let them?
