On May 3, a day after she felt fatigued while pitching for Potomac School, Yanna Bravewolf tested positive for the coronavirus. So after taking more than a week off, she spent the past two days working out on a local high school’s turf field, trying to get back to her team for Saturday’s Independent School League AA softball championship.

She already had missed two games, one of them in this ISL tournament. These workouts were a test — for herself and for her school’s athletic trainer — to ensure no effects of her illness remained.

After getting the go-ahead Friday night to rejoin her team, Bravewolf led off Saturday’s game against Flint Hill. She drew a walk, stole second base and then scored on a double. The Panthers jumped out early in Alexandria and pummeled the Huskies, 15-0, in a four-inning mercy-rule victory for the league crown.

“I just was missing [my team] so much while I was in quarantine, and I was just envisioning the day I would come back and be able to give them all a hug,” said Bravewolf, who played first base Saturday. “This team is so special to me, and I’m going to be so sad when I leave. … Today was definitely my favorite moment of the week.”

Potomac (17-1) finished with the best conference record and won the tournament title — the first time it accomplished both in the same season since 2005. The tournament victory is the team’s sixth and first since 2019. The Panthers’ last three tournament championship victories have all come against the Huskies (9-5).

This one came without Coach Wayne Loving, who found himself in an unusual place during a game — at home.

Loving also recently tested positive for the coronavirus and had to support his team from afar. He spent the contest refreshing the GameChanger app for play-by-play updates.

“Time will tell,” Loving said over the phone before the game when asked how he would manage his nerves without having his usual activities of pitch-calling and third base coaching to distract him.

The early lead and his team’s dominance quieted any worry.

“It was very relaxing,” he said afterward. “After getting three runs in the first inning and a few more in the second, it was easy to watch.”

The Panthers will begin the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs Tuesday.

Maret shut down Stone Ridge, 6-0, to win the ISL softball A division championship behind a strong pitching performance by junior CJ Roy, who finished with 10 strikeouts in a complete game.

“Came out strong and finished strong,” Coach Janet Reed said. “We’re excited to go into AA [next year] and compete with the upper-league teams.”

Softball Top 10: Three unbeaten teams vault up the midseason rankings - The Washington Post

In the six weeks since <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/03/21/softball-top-10-oconnell-comes-out-firing-chesapeake-is-right-behind-seasons-first-rankings/" target="_blank">our preseason softball rankings</a> were released, a handful of squads have risen to the top as capable state title contenders.

<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/04/18/dominant-9-0-start-damascus-softball-sweeps-long-awaited-round-robin/" target="_blank">Damascus has plowed through its competition</a> with relative ease, boasting a 14-0 record including nine shutouts. Isabella DiGiandomenico threw a perfect game in the Hornets’ 15-0 win over Poolesville, tossing 11 strikeouts on 57 pitches April 28.

An upcoming battle with Sherwood (11-1) will test the mettle of both teams and could be a precursor for a postseason matchup.

Seven teams remain in our top 10, while Damascus, Tuscarora and Reservoir have joined the rankings. There’s still plenty of movement to be made in the coming weeks, but these are the teams that have impressed the most.

The Post will update its rankings at the season’s conclusion.

<b>1. Damascus (14-0) Last ranked: Not ranked</b>

The undefeated Hornets took down Blake, 13-0.

After giving up 21 runs in a game when <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/04/06/katie-kutz-softball/" target=_blank>ace Katie Kutz</a> didn’t pitch, the Knights rebounded against McLean, 5-2.

After edging Howard, 3-2, the Gators pummeled Mt. Hebron, 6-0.

The Cougars lost their bid for an undefeated season by falling, 3-0, to Arundel.

Woodgrove narrowly defeated Stone Bridge, 2-0, in a makeup game.

The Warhawks throttled Centreville, 24-0.

A 9-2 victory over Flint Hill was Potomac’s eighth straight win.

Two of the Lions’ losses came in one-run defeats to No. 4 Reservoir.

Reservoir pitcher Maggie Frisvold glanced down at her wristband to check the signs one last time Wednesday afternoon. A run was in, the bases were loaded, and there were two outs in the sixth inning. The Gators were clinging to a one-run lead against Howard, and she needed one more strike to get out of the jam.

A high, rising strike later and Frisvold escaped the inning. She returned for the seventh to close out a 3-2 win that kept the host Gators undefeated at 12-0.

“I’m just trying to get ahead so I can get batters and stay confident in my ability,” said Frisvold, who closed out the sixth with six straight strikes. “Just pound the zone and just control my pitches because I can’t control their swings, so I have to just throw strikes.”

A tennis ball shortage has forced some coaches to scramble

The win came just five days after the two teams played at Howard, a game Reservoir won, 1-0, with Frisvold striking out 16. The two wins over the Lions (8-3-1) give the Gators a cushion over one of their main competitors as they attempt to repeat as Howard County champions.

Frisvold’s mother and the team’s coach, Julie, missed the game with an illness. Reservoir’s assistant coaches, Dave Burke and Megan Maloney, found out about her absence as the team began warming up.

“I’ve been here 12 years; this is only the third time Coach Frisvold hasn’t been able to attend a game,” Burke said.

Burke stayed at his customary third base spot while Maloney shifted from the dugout to coach first base.

Burke stayed at his customary third base spot while Maloney shifted from the dugout to coach first base. Maloney continued to call pitches for the Gators, guiding Frisvold, a junior Maryland Baltimore County commit, with a system based on three numbers.

The first number denoted the pitch, the second the height and the third the horizontal placement. Even though this is Maloney’s first season calling pitches, she and Frisvold have known each other since the pitcher “was toddling around the dugout,” Burke said.

That relationship translated to two key mound visits — one in the third and one in the sixth — in which Maloney helped Frisvold regroup as the Lions rallied.

The pitcher gave up one run in each inning but buckled down afterward to exit without further damage. In the third inning, she ended the frame by snagging a line drive with runners on first and second.

“Maggie is the most poised pitcher that I’ve ever seen,” Burke said. “She doesn’t get rattled. . . . She has the shortest memory of any pitcher I’ve ever seen.”

Nicholas Kosimbei, Susanna Sullivan win Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run - The Washington Post

The blue banner wrapped itself around Nicholas Kosimbei as he ran through it and crossed the finish line. The 25-year-old Kenyan stuck both his index fingers in the air, marking himself as the first-place male finisher in the 2022 Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run.

Sunday’s run was the first Cherry Blossom race since April 2019 to take place under the namesake blossoms. After two virtual races and one September event last year, the racers finally got to run under the light pink flowers.

Kosimbei finished in 45 minutes 15 seconds, tying the course record set by fellow Kenyan Allan Kiprono in 2012. It was Kosimbei’s first Cherry Blossom run and his first 10-mile race. He took an early lead but said he had to push through fatigue in the ninth mile.
