After frantically combing through the debris of a devastated mosque throughout the night and Tuesday morning, police called off the search for survivors of a suicide bombing at the highly guarded site where several hundred police officers and soldiers had gathered Monday for afternoon prayers.

Muhammad Azam Khan, the acting chief minister of this northwestern province, announced that 95 people had been killed and 221 injured, making it one of the deadliest attacks ever on Pakistan’s security forces. The blast signaled the revival of violent tactics by the Pakistani Taliban, which had once been quelled by a military crackdown and until recently was in peace talks with the government.
