Comey says he does not know what ‘that thing’ was

During his line of questioning, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) appeared to try to link the FBI’s closed investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and the ongoing probe into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Comey seemed somewhat confused by McCain’s line of questioning, during which the former Republican presidential candidate said he thought there was a “double standard” at work, although it was unclear precisely what the senator meant.

McCain asked Comey about the part of his prepared remarks in which the former FBI director mentioned Trump telling him they “had that thing you know.” McCain wanted to know what Comey thought “that thing” meant, but the former FBI director said he was not sure.

Comey said that as best he could tell, Trump was invoking their dinner a week after the inauguration, when he said Trump asked him for a pledge of loyalty. But he acknowledged this was his best estimation.
