He and his allies have used ongoing protests against the nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh to serve on the Supreme Court as an argument against Democratic policies broadly. Those protests, in which elected officials were confronted by angry groups and which resulted in numerous arrests, were certainly unusual in their fervency.

But were they really a demonstration of a party that has lost its attachment to reality or civilized discourse? Was it really something unusual in American politics? Or did the recent protests, in broad strokes, echo the furious protests that accompanied the tea party movement and the effort to pass Obamacare eight years ago?
