President Trump tweeted that Attorney General Jeff Sessions would be replaced on an acting basis by Matthew G. Whitaker, giving new oversight to the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Sessions resigned Wednesday at the president’s request.

Whitaker has been openly critical of the investigation, calling last year for Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein to limit its scope and musing on CNN that replacing Sessions might make the probe’s budget “so low that his investigation grinds to almost a halt.”

As acting attorney general, Whitaker could cut funding for the investigation.

Democrats and government watchdog groups have called for Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation based on those statements, as Sessions did in March, presenting two potential paths for the investigation’s oversight.
