Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey avoids a GOP runoff; will face Maddox in November

Incumbent Kay Ivey won the Republican nomination for governor of Alabama, avoiding a runoff.

With 72 percent of the vote tallied, the Associated Press declared Ivey the winner of a five-way primary. She was carrying about 56 percent of the vote. The Republican will face Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, who won the Democratic nomination. She begins as a substantial favorite, given the conservative lean of the state.

Ivey became governor last year after Robert Bentley, a fellow Republican, resigned.
