Rep. Kristi Noem won the Republican nomination for governor of South Dakota, taking a major step toward becoming the first woman in the history of the state to hold the top job.
Noem defeated state Attorney General Marty Jackley. With all precincts reporting, Noem defeated Jackley 56 percent to 44 percent.
Noem will begin as a heavy favorite against the winner of the Democratic primary. South Dakota leans strongly conservative.
