Incumbent Rep. Darren Soto has won his party’s primary after defeating liberal firebrand Alan Grayson, who abandoned the seat in 2016 for a failed run at the Senate.
With all precincts counted, he defeated Grayson 66 percent to 34 percent.
Soto, the first Florida congressman of Puerto Rican descent, overcame Grayson in bitterly ought campaign that came to be defined by their opposing views on impeaching President Trump. The 40-year-old said he wanted to wait for special counsel Robert Mueller to finish his probe, while Grayson said he backed immediate impeachment.
Soto also came under attack for accepting a $200,000 donation from a PAC funded by 21st Century Fox chie executive James Murdoch, but Grayson’s negative attacks clashed with his generally positive campaign and failed to deliver the votes.
Soto edged ahead in fundraising, amassing $1.1 million to Grayson’s $830,000, and is likely to return to Congress representing the safe blue seat.
