Vermont Gov. Phil Scott beats back conservative primary challenge

First-term Republican governor Phil Scott pushed back a conservative primary challenge, defeating grocery store owner Keith Stern after the Republican Governors Association jumped in to avoid an upset.

Stern, an activist who criticized Scott’s support for a gun control bill, raised less than $60,000 for his campaign — half of it his own money. The RGA spent $216,000 on ads boosting Scott, whose 2016 victory was a bright spot for Republicans in the Northeast. As of Tuesday, the RGA-backed Stronger Vermont super PAC still had more than three times as much money to spend.

This post has been updated to reflect that Scott’s lead widened as the night went on.
