Today, President Biden had separate meetings at the White House with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and family members of two Americans detained in Russia: Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan. According to pool reports Friday, Biden met first with the sister of Whelan, a former Marine convicted of espionage in Russia, and then separately with the wife and agent of the WNBA star.
“These two individuals ought to be home, period,” White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters Friday ahead of the meeting, saying Biden is “not going to let up” in his efforts to get Russia to free Griner and Whelan. “We want these two individuals home back where they belong with their families.”
