Today, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) was formally reelected by his colleagues to continue leading the Democratic caucus, which will expand its ranks to 51 members when the new Congress convenes next month. The caucus also nominated Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to serve as Senate president pro tem, a position which is third in line for the presidency. Murray, who is replacing the retiring Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), will become the first woman to hold the post.
On the other side of the Capitol, the House passed and is sending to President Biden’s desk a bill protecting same-sex marriages, marking one of the last major legislative achievements during the tenure of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who is stepping down from leadership next month when Republicans take control of the chamber. The bill would require that people be considered married in any state as long as the marriage was valid in the state where it was performed.
