State of the Union highlights Biden emphatically declares ‘state of the union is strong’

In his State of the Union address, President Biden said “the soul of this nation is strong, because … the backbone of this nation is strong” as he delivered a defiant, sweeping speech, hailing bipartisan laws and challenging Republicans. The speech was punctuated by outbursts from Republicans over immigration and the border, Medicare and Social Security. The flares from the GOP lawmakers drew shushing from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as he sat behind the president.

  • After noting the parents of Tyre Nichols — the Black man who died after a beating by Memphis police during a traffic stop — were in the audience as his guests, the president urged legislative action. “Let’s do what we know in our hearts we need to do. Let’s come together to finish the job on police reform,” Biden said. “Do something. Do something.”
  • Biden says the climate crisis doesn’t care if people are in a red or blue state. “It’s an existential threat,” he said. “We have an obligation not to ourselves what our children, grandchildren are confronting.”
  • In the official Republican response to Biden’s address, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said without evidence, “we are under attack in a left wing culture war,” citing her own executive actions to “ban CRT [critical race theory], racism and indoctrination in our schools.”
