Today, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is introducing himself to voters in Iowa, traditionally the first presidential nominating state. During a speech in Davenport, DeSantis, who is expected to announce a bid for the Republican presidential nomination in the spring, denounced the nation’s “elites” and touted highlights of his tenure, including resisting pandemic restrictions and flying undocumented immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard. Former president Donald Trump is scheduled to make his first stop of the 2024 campaign cycle in Iowa on Monday. Several other GOP hopefuls, including former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, have already touched down in the state.
